“A health asset is any factor or resource which enhances the ability of individuals, communities and populations to maintain and sustain health and well-being. These assets can operate at the level of the individual, family or community as protective and promoting factors to buffer against life’s stresses.” Anthony Morgan, 2009
There is growing interest in ‘asset-based approaches’ in Scotland, including in the most recent report
from the Chief Medical Officer. Asset approaches recognise that individuals and communities are part of the solution, work with people rather than viewing them as passive recipients of services, and empower people to control their future.
The Self Management Fund for Scotland is demonstrating that even a small investment in asset based approaches can produce a significant outcome in terms of quality of life for individuals, capacity building for people and communities, and reductions in the pressure on public services.
LTCAS has worked with the Scottish Community Development Centre and Scottish Government to explore the possible formation of an assets alliance in Scotland. To find out more please read the report of the inception event held in December 2010.
